Abdelkader Bensalah has been selected as acting head of state of the Algerian Presidency for the next 90 days after the resignation of Abdelaziz Bouteflika in April 2019 who ruled Algeria for nearly 20 years and was Algeria’s longest serving president.

According to Article 102 of the of the Algerian Constitution. Bensalah will serve as the acting head of state for a 90 day period while the country prepares for presidential elections. However, Bensalah will not be permitted to run for office as a presidential candidate.

Protests broke out in Algiers over the selection of Bensalah who is perceived as being a loyalist to the regime.
